At the entrance to Newport Rugby club stand memorial gates erected to commemorate the club members who fell in World War I. Wrought iron gates are hung from masonry piers upon which are copper plaques detailing the names of those remembered.
In 2006 War Memorials Trust contributed £1,500 towards the complete restoration of the gates, piers and plaques. This included cleaning, making repairs and re-gilding decorative features.
The gates were erected in 1923 to commemorate 86 club members. They were unveiled on 6th September that year by Lord Tredegar. The dedication ceremony included the Last Post, the Reveille and National Anthem. Wreaths were laid by, amongst others the NAC Platoon. 260 club members had served during the war and some had served in this Platoon as part of the 8th Battalion, The South Wales Borders. Of those lost 5 had been part of the Platoon. 8 of those remembered on the plaques had been Welsh Rugby Internationals.
