Winsley war memorial after conservation and repair © E Gilby, 2014The war memorial in the village of Winsley in the very far west of Wiltshire is a Portland stone cross on a tall pillar on a plinth, standing on a three-stepped base. The cross has short arms, and a laurel wreath is carved in relief in the middle of the cross. The names of the fallen of World War I are inscribed on the octagonal plinth and the names of the World War II fallen on the top step. Winsley war memorial before work © E Gilby, 2013The memorial stands on a junction at the centre of the village, adjacent to Manor Farm, on triangle of grass with a stone kerb. The World War I dedication reads

In 2014 a grant of £1,325 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards conservation and repair. The memorial was cleaned using low pressure steam cleaning and defective joints were re-pointed using a lime mortar. Repairs to the surface of the stone were carried out using lime mortar and areas of damaged stone were repaired using stainless steel pins and lime mortar. The inscription was re-painted to match the original. A previous grant of £210 was offered in 2005 by English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation.

It is not definitely known who erected the memorial, although it is very similar to others in nearby villages that were the work of James Long Ltd of Trowbridge.
