Kirkby war memorial cross stands in the grounds of St Chad's Church. A 4-stepped base supports two plinths upon which stands a cross. Christ's face is engraved on the central part of the cross.
In 1991 the memorial was damaged. The cross was destroyed and the pieces held in storage whilst the plinth remained in the churchyard of St Chad’s. The local community decided to restore the memorial led by the King's Regiment Assoication (Knowsley).
War Memorials Trust became involved in the project. In autumn 2005 the charity marked the 60th Anniversary of the end of World War II with a direct mail shot asking supporters and members to help it protect and conserve war memorials. Kirkby war memorial was featured.
At the beginning of 2007 work was completed. The memorial has received grant monies in excess of £10,000 from War Memorials. A combination of the Anniversary Appeal award of £8,760 from the direct mail shot and a David Graves grant of £2,000 in 2007.
A Grants for War Memorials award funded by English Heritage and The Wolfson Foundation was also made.
The war memorial cross was dedicated in 1920 to commemorate those of the area who fought and died in World War I.
