Beacon Hill war memorial after work © Haslemere Town Council, 2006The war memorial on Beacon Hill, Hindhead, south west Surrey is a Doulting stone gable crucifix on a plinth and a two-stepped hexagonal base. It stands on a paved area in the churchyard of St Alban’s. Names of the fallen of both world wars are recorded around the sides of the plinth. There is an angled plaque fixed to the steps, on which is the dedicatory text.

In 2006/7 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation made a grant of £770 towards work to clean the memorial and to cut out eroded stones at the top of the steps and to replace them with stone to match.

The dedication reads

"To the glory of god and in loving
memory of the men of this parish
and others who died for their
country in the two world wars
and in thanksgiving for those who
served and were kept safe this
cross was erected by parishioners
and friends"

The memorial was designed by Mr CG Hare of Messrs Bodley and Hare of Lincoln’s Inn Fields, London and the sculptor was Mr Hitch of Vauxhall, London. It was dedicated on 14th December 1919.
