Knowl Hill (Star Works) war memorial © Hurley Parish Council, 2009The memorial just inside the entrance to the Grundon Waste Management site on Star Lane, Knowl Hill, Berkshire commemorates the workers and staff of Warner and Co. tile works. The memorial consists of a wooden plaque, upon which is inscribed a roll of honour, mounted within an oak frame on low brick supports, and protected by a pitched tiled roof. The oak frame and roof support has elaborately decorated scrolls.

In 2008/9 English Heritage and the Wolfson Foundation gave £2,050 towards work to replace broken roof tiles, repair the oak supports, replace much of the oak frame including the oak bases, truss ends, scrolls and finials, re-point the brick work and clean, polish and re-carve lettering on the plaque.

The inscription on the memorial reads

"1914     Roll of Honour     1919
of brave and loyal members of the staff of
Warner and Company
the Star Works, Knowl Hill, Berks
who, leaving their peaceful avocations, took up arms for their
country in the Great War, and of whom some laid down their lives."

The memorial was dedicated on 26 April 1925 by 98 year old Sir George Higginson, a British army general and Crimean war hero, who came from nearby Marlow.
