This bronze war memorial plaque lists the names of those killed in both World Wars and is attached to a war memorial building (originally a market hall) located in the market square, Princes Risborough, Buckinghamshire.
War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,242 for the bronze plaque to be steam cleaned so that the inscriptions could be read clearly, for the bronze to be re-patinated and waxed. Additionally, the lower bronze plaque was replaced to include the name of F/SGT A. Davies who was killed in Afghanistan in 2006.
The market hall dates from 1824 as the gift of John Grubb. In the 1920s, the market hall was in a poor state of repair, so the town decided to fund the repair and restoration through The National War Memorial Fund, making the whole building a war memorial with the addition of a clock, plaque, and cottage for the Parish Nurse. The memorial was erected by Mr Lavington who was the builder, and Mr T. Thurlow who was the mason. The opening and dedication took place on 31st October 1920. The opening was performed by Major Colingsby Disraeli, and the dedication was performed by the Lord Bishop of Buckingham. The market house is listed at grade II*.
The inscription on the plaque reads:
This market house was restored and
the new clock erected in memory of those men
of this parish who fell in the Great War
1914-1919
Greater love hath no man than this
These also made the supreme sacrifice
in the Second World War. 1939-1945
These also gave their lives during
the 1939-1945 conflict
in the service of their Country
but were omitted from the tablet above
