Crantock war memorial hall © Crantock Parish Council, 2009This memorial hall is located in Crantock village centre near Newquay, Cornwall, and is in a conservation area. The memorial hall is a single storey structure with the names of those killed in World War I detailed in shields above the main door and those killed in World War II are detailed in similar shields to the sides of the door. There is a small cross located above the projecting porch, and the hall is fronted by a low wall surmounted by posts and chain. This grant was related to the window on the north side of the memorial hall.

Crantock war memorial hall window before repair © Crantock Parish Council, 2009In 2009, War Memorials Trust gave a grant for £506 for the replacement of the north window to the original design using softwood timber and painted white. This was required as the wooden frame of the window had rotten to an extent that water was able to enter the building and had damaged interior plasterwork; it was no longer possible to repair the frame so it had to be replaced. As the memorial hall is located in a seaside environment where there is salty sea air, the wood was pressure treated and provided with three coats of white paint which was factory sprayed to allow the window to have longevity.

Crantock war memorial hall window after repair © Crantock Parish Council, 2009The memorial hall was built c. 1922 to commemorate those killed in World War I, and later also for those killed in World War II. As well as being used as a place of remembrance, the hall was also used as a Men’s Institute for recreation. In 1995 the building was passed to the Parish Council in a poor condition, and the Parish Council has since repaired and maintained the building, including a regular programme of maintenance which the Parish Council and Memorial Hall Committee are responsible for. The memorial hall is now used for Parish Council meetings, village activities etc. It is also the centre of the village’s Remembrance Day ceremonies when wreaths are laid there.
