In the main entrance to Cardiff High School a plaque commemorate those of the school who fell in the First World War.
War Memorials Trust assisted a conservation project with a grant of £325. The plaque required cleaning and re-colouring, the application of protective wax coating and refitting. The memorial was badly discoloured and the work ensured the inscription and the names of those recorded on the memorial could be read by students, staff and visitors to the school.
There are many former students and teachers recorded on the memorial. The inscription above thier names reads:
To the glorious memory of the old boys of this school who gave their lives for God King and Empire in the Great War 1914-1919.
One of those recorded on the memorial is Second Lieutenant Alan Thompson Watt Boswell. Research on the Commonwealth War Graves Commission Debt of Honour revealed that he served with 108th Squadron of the RAF. He died on 2 October 1918, aged 28, on a bombing mission over Belgium. Having attended Cardiff High School Alan Boswell moved onto Cardiff University obtaining a BSc. He was a active sportsman representing Wales as an amateur on the football field as well as playing for Cardiff City. He also represented Glamorgan Cricket Club whose website archive details that he represented the county in 1914 against Weston-super-Mare contributing 7 runs as Glamorgan won by an innings and 64 runs.
