This war memorial is a bronze plaque with an alabaster frame and the inscriptions are raised letters and gilded, and commemorate the men of the Parish who died in World War I. It is located on the north wall of the north aisle of All Saints’ Church, Hoby.
In 2008, War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £805.00 towards the cleaning and repair of the memorial. The memorial had been damaged by water and bat urine, and a lack of maintenance. Therefore, the works to repair the memorial consisted of cleaning the bronze plaque with PH neutral soap in de-ionised (distilled) warm water, and the use of white spirit if there were greasy deposits. The frame had some missing pointing, so this was re-pointed with plaster of Paris. The alabaster frame was cleaned with a reduced water V&A mix (white spirit/water and non ionic detergent) and cotton wall swabs. The diamond detailed border of the plaque which had lost a lot of its blue elements was repainted with artists’ acrylics. A coat of oil gilding was applied to the existing gilt inscription and alabaster frame to renew the gilding which had faded. Finally, the whole tablet was coated with Cosmolloid wax and buffed with soft cloth to protect the memorial in future.
This memorial was dedicated on 30th May 1920, and the address at the service was given by Admiral Earl Beatty. The memorial cost £15 and was paid for by public subscription which raised £71 16s 2d, the memorial was made by Mr Frank J. C. Jordan of Leicester.
