The Black Merchant Seamen war memorial is sited in Falkner Square, Liverpool. It is constructed of red sand stone with relief carvings to the top and side. On the front face is a metal plaque.
Over the years the memorial plaque has been stolen, only to be found months later defaced and damaged. It subsequently suffered from graffiti. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £273 to remove the graffiti by steam cleaning.
The memorial was commissioned in 1993, the 50th Anniversary of the Battle of the Atlantic by the Gallery and Liverpool City Council and is dedicated to all those who served in World War II. The memorial was unveiled by the President of the British Shipping Organisation and a World War II veteran.
The inscription reads:
This plaque is dedicated to
All Black Merchant Seamen who served
During the 1939-1945 war
“They held their course”
Respect Due
