Monks Risborough war memorial is a Celtic wheel cross which stands on the corner of Mill Lane and Aylesbury Road. It is constructed of granite with an inscribed plinth standing on a 3-stepped base. The memorial is on a raised area of paving with two steps elading up to the York stone paving. The memorial is within Monks Risborough cosnervation area conservation area and is grade II listed.
In 2006 a grant of £1,500 was awarded towards repairs including re-pointing and work on the steps, relaying of York stone and steam cleaning. The work was necessary to conserve the memorial and ensure it as accessible and safe. The application was made following a structural survey which clearly indentified the work required. The local community had also been consulted about the possibility of moving the memorial but they felt the original site should be honoured so works were undertaken to make this suitable.
War Memorials Trust applied for the memorial to be listed in April 2005 and it was listed at grade II in October of that year.
The memorial was unveiled on 13 November 1921 by the Lord Lieutenant of Buckinghamshire (The Marquis of Lincolnshire) and the dedication performed by Rev. M. L. Whitchurch. The memorial's designer was Mr J. W. Killer of Aylesbury. In 1935 Princes Risborough Parish Council formerly took on responsibility for the memorial.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
To the Glory of God
and in everlasting memory
of the men of this Parish
who fell in the Great War
Greater love hath no man than
this, that a man lay down his life
for his friends
1939-1945
