Hertford war memorial cenotaph © WMT, 2007Hertford war memorial is a Portland stone wide obelisk with a life size sculpture of a bronze hart on top. There is a moulded plinth and base which contains stone tablets with the names of the fallen from World War I and World War II. It is set within a raised area in Parliament Square with an almost circular coping wall.

The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.

In 2000/1 a grant of £5,000 was made towards cleaning the bronze statue and re-pointing on the main memorial through the English Heritage Grants for the Repair and Conservation of War Memorials scheme.

In 2007 a further grant was offered. The main problems with the war memorial were that there was copper staining on the stone and cracked pointing. The perimeter wall had been damaged by skateboarders. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1,500 towards the cleaning, repairs to the wall and the erection of metal railings to prevent further damage.Hertford war memorial cenotaph © Hertford TC, 2009

The war memorial was designed by the famous architect Sir Aston Webb and is listed grade II. It was unveiled by Alderman J. Burnett-Smith in November 1921.

The inscriptions read:

"To the men of Hertford who gave their lives in the Great War 1914-1919
And in the Second World War 1939-1945"
