This war memorial is in the shape of a cenotaph, taken from the design by Sir Edwin Lutyens, the most famous of which is in Whitehall London. The word ‘cenotaph’ means ‘empty tomb’ in ancient Greek (kenos = empty and taphos = tomb). It is made of limestone with a bronze laurel wreath at the front.
The cenotaph is located in Snodland Cemetery in Snodland, Kent. It was dedicated in June 1920 by Rear Admiral Sir Doveton Sturdee.
War Memorials Trust gave £308 for the cenotaph to be cleaned with water and soft bristle brushes. Some of the joints were also repointed with lime mortar.
The inscription reads:
To the glory of God
And in memory of the following men of Snodland
Who gave their lives for humanity
In the Great War 1914-1919
