Holme , Homfirth, and Newmill war memorial is a stone cross which surmounts a four-stepped base and plinth. Draped over the arms of the cross is a wreath carved out of the stone, there is also a sword carved in relief on the memorial. To the rear of the main memorial is a stone wall which contains granite tablets with the names of those killed during World War I and World War II in lead lettering. The site also contains two flights of steps. The memorial is located in the gardens in the grounds of the Holme Valley War Memorial Hospital, Huddersfield Road, Holmfirth, West Yorkshire.
In 2007 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,230 through the Trust’s Small Grants Scheme towards the raking out of any failed joints on the main memorial, steps and cross with hand tools, and their re-pointing with hydraulic lime mortar. This repair work meant that the failed joints which could allow water into the memorial’s structure were sealed; if the joints were not re-pointed, in the winter months this water could freeze, therefore expanding and cracking the stone. The surface of the memorial was gently cleaned. The lead lettering had the oxidation cleaned from it with a fine wire wool, and lead black was applied with moleskin to protect it.
This memorial was funded by public subscription (along with the hospital). It was erected after World War I and the names of those killed in World War II were added subsequently.
