Plaque c Rode PC, 2008This war memorial is located on the village green in Rode, near Frome in Somerset. It is a Portland stone cross with three stepped base. It is set within a gravelled area with stone bollards and chain link fence. A total of 21 names are recorded from the First World War and 9 from the Second World War.

Over time, the stone had become dirty with pollution and masonry joints had become open which was letting water into the memorial. The name plaques had also begun to ‘delaminate’. This means that thin layers of stone had begun to break off due to the natural weathering process. As a result, the names were becoming difficult to read. War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £1947 towards steam cleaning of the stone, re-pointing the joints with lime mortar and replacing the stone plaques.

The memorial was unveiled in November 1920 and was designed by the architect Edwin Wooley.

Rode Cross c Rode PC, 2008The inscription reads:

The
Villagers Tribute
To Their Glorious Dead
Who Fell In The Great War
AD 1914-1918
"The Lord Hath Wrought Great Things By Them Through His Great Power"
These Men Of Ours, Unselfish, Unafraid
Went To The World Wide Fight
Forget Not How They Fought And How We Prayed
For England And For Right
