The Downham Market war memorial cross stands on Church road and is one of the inner gateways to the town. The memorial is within a conservation area. The memorial is surrounded by a small memorial garden.
In 2008 War Memorials Trust contributed £2,500 towards a project to improve access to the memorial and repair the crack in the back wall of the site. The original site had had soft-bed planted areas in front of the benches from which people contemplate the memorial. The beds were replaced at some point with pebbles. The community now sought to undo that action to improve access to the memorial and enable more people to gather safely at the site.
Public subscription paid for the war memorial. It was unveiled on 21st October 1921.
The memorial remembers 73 fallen of World War I and 24 from World War II.
