This memorial is located next to the Town Hall, Newbrough, Northumberland. It has a two-stepped sandstone base surmounted by tapering pedestal, shaft and wheel cross made from granite. At the base of the shaft on the front elevation of the memorial is a bronze plaque with an inscription. On the front face of the pedestal is a copper plaque inscribed with the fallen of World War I, and on the front face of the higher step is a bronze plaque inscribed with the names of the fallen of World War II.
In June 2007 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £950 to clean the stonework, remove staining and re-point some joints. The metal plaques were also cleaned with steam and waxed to reduce future maintenance.
The inscription at the base of the shaft reads
Greater love hath no man than this
that a man lay down his life for his friends.
The memorial was unveiled by Sir Percy Wilkinson in 1920. The architect was Mr. Willy and the builders Messrs Beattie and Co. and Mr Charlton. The names of the men on the memorial are listed at the North East War Memorials page.
