This is a square shafted cross located in St Andrew’s Churchyard, Swavesey, Cambridgeshire. It is made from a pink granite but this had become obscured by algae. It was then damaged during 2007 by falling branches from cedar trees in the churchyard.
War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £480 to repair the cross. This included a technique called ‘piecing –in’ where replacement pieces of matching coloured stone are used to fix damaged areas. The whole memorial was also cleaned with low pressure water and soft bristle brushes.
There are inscriptions on two sides of the plinth. Theyread:
In loving and grateful memory of
the following men of this parish
who gave their lives for
their King and Country
in the Great War 1914-1919
'I am the resurrection and the life'
In loving and grateful memory
of the men of this Parish
who fell in the World War
1939-1945
'Their name liveth for evermore'
The Falklands 1982
