The war memorial in Dane John Gardens remembers those of the Buffs and East Kent Yeomanry who died in the war in South Africa in 1899 – 1902. The obelisk rises from a panelled base with the names recorded on three sides. The front supports a pedestal with a figure of a soldier in the Boer War campaign, standing at ease with slouch, hat and bandolier looking towards South Africa.
In 1998 War Memorials Trust contributed £100 towards a conservation project which was also funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. Conservation was required as the stone used for the statue was more suitable to indoor use and had begun to crumble due to weathering.
The memorial was unveiled on 24th May 1904 by Field Marshal The Right Honourable Earl Roberts. It was designed by Mr William Douglas Caroe and the Architect was Mr Nathaniel Hitch. The lettering on the memorial was designed by Eric Gill.
The inscription on the memorial reads:
To the glorious memory and in grateful
remembrance of the devoted and heroic service
of the Officers, Non Commissioned Officers and Men of
the Buffs - East Kent regiment
and of the
Imperial Yeomanry of East Kent
who gave their lives in the Country’s cause
during the war in South Africa 1899 – 1902
this memorial has been erected by their com
-rades in arms belonging to East Kent regiments
and by their sorrowing friends in the county
