The Scotch stone war memorial for Brinsworth and Canklow is a Latin cross with a decorated shaft with inscriptions on the shaft and plinth. The memorial stands on a two-stepped base and a further plaque is attached to the steps. The memorial is on a raised platform and is surrounded by bollards and a chain fence in the graveyard of St George's Church on Brinsworth Lane.
In 2006, War Memorials Trust offered £340 towards re-lettering the war memorial as the letters of the inscriptions and names were fading. The works involved stripping paint from the letters and numerals, re-engraving by hand and re-painting. As these letters and numbers were originally painted it is appropriate to maintain the painting in keeping with the design of the original memorial.
In early 1919 the two communities of Brinsworth and Canklow joined together to raise funds for a war memorial. In February 1923 the target for fundraising had been met. On 1st July, chosen to coincide with the Battle of the Somme, a ceremony took place to unveil and dedicate the memorial. Parading from Brinsworth Community School those attending participated in a Church service (although many were unable to get inside) and then gathered at the memorial to watch Mr T. W. Grundy MP for Rother Valley unveil the memorial.
76 names are listed on the memorial, 55 fell during World War I with the rest added following the end of World War II.
