Chilworth memorial cross before works © St Martha's PCC, 2014The war memorial in the Surrey village of Chilworth, beneath the North Downs, stands on Dorking Road. The memorial is a plain cross on a square plinth on a three-stepped octagonal plinth. A down-pointing bronze sword hangs on the front of the cross and there are bronze plaques attached to the faces of the plinth. There is an inscription on the top step. The memorial has received multiple grants.

In June 2001, War Memorials Trust’s Small Grants Scheme gave £200 towards cleaning the memorial, re-pointing and repairing the stonework and applying a minor lime shelter coating to prolong the life of the soft and eroded areas of the memorial.

Chilworth memorial cross showing damage to the steps before works © St Martha's PCC, 2014In 2014 an application to the Grants for War Memorials scheme was received for works to the damaged steps of the memorial. The steps were significantly cracked and delaminated and had previously under gone repairs. Due to the extent of the damage it was felt that the most appropriate course of action was to lift the cross and replace the steps allowing for an inspection of the foundations and possible renewal of this. A grant of £11,119 was offered towards a project cost Chilworth war memorial after works © St Martha's PC, 2014of £14,933. When the memorial was lifted and the steps removed it was clear that the condition of the foundations were good and no work was required to these. As such there was a reduction in the project cost meaning that the final grant awarded was for £9183.

The inscription on the top step of the memorial reads

Hold such

honour

This inscription was re-cut on new stone as part of the 2014 project. This was undertaken in the same font and style as the original. The memorial is not in its original site, as it was moved in 1975 due to a road widening scheme.
