The Portland stone war memorial in the village of Bramfield in north east Suffolk is a wheel cross on a shaft on a plinth on a square base. There is a foliate decoration in the centre of the cross and a badge near the bottom of the shaft with the dates 1914 – 1918 carved on it. There are raised lead letters on the plinth and on the base. The memorial stands in the churchyard of St Andrew’s parish church, which is unusual in having a thatched roof and a cylindrical bell tower. The bell tower, which stands separately from the church, is over thirteen metres high and its wall is over a metre thick.
In June 2001 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £100 towards work to clean and re-point the memorial, and to re-cut and re-enamel the letters.
The text on one side of the plinth reads:
"To the glory of God and in
memory of the
following men of this
parish who lost their lives in the
Great War
E.J. Brown H. Keable
F.J. Smith A.C. Smith C.W. Staff"
And on the other side:
"1939 – 1945
Tom Smith William Lovett"
And on the base:
"Lest we forget"
