Hales and Heckingham war memorial cross © Jim Marriage, 2010The memorial to the fallen of the villages of Hales and Heckingham in eastern Norfolk is stone Celtic cross situated at crossroads of School Lane and Green Lane in Hales. The rough stone memorial stands on a plinth which has two rough faces and two polished faces. The names of the fallen of Hales are on the side of the plinth facing their village and the fallen of Heckingham are on the opposite side, facing their village.

In March 2001 War Memorials Trust gave £150 towards work to add five names to the memorial. This was effected by the addition of a plinth underneath the original plinth to which the names were added. As the memorial was at that point dismantled for repair this addition could be done quite easily.

Hales and Heckingham war memorial cross © Jim Marriage, 2010The memorial had been damaged in a traffic accident in April 1999, and the villagers took the opportunity to inquire about any names that could be added to the memorial. Research uncovered five Second World War names: E E Crisp (2nd the London Irish Rifles) Ronald Tovell (Royal Army Service Corps), S W Wade (4th Royal Norfolks), Claude H Colchester (4th Royal Norfolks) and Robert S Moore (Royal Engineers).
