A two storey climbing hut was erected by the British Mountaineering Club in Glen Brittle, Carbost on the Isle of Skye. The Glen Brittle Memorial Mountaineering Hut is a memorial to climbers lost in the Second World War with a plaque outside the hut recording their contribution.
In 2002 War Memorials Trust contribute £250 to a project to upgrade the hut. The Celotex internal cladding needed to be replaced with plasterboard whilst the doors required modification to make certain they meet fire safety regulations. Such work ensures the hut contains to be used as fulfills its role as a hut and memorial.
The hut stands on the MacLeod Estate; a location suggested by the Scottish Mountaineering Club. Donations towards its construction came from public subcription with climbers, clubs and family and friends of climbers who died in the Second World War giving. Gifts in kind, such as I.C.I. being persuded by a committee member to provide all the materials to construct the water supply were vital in creating the structure built by local builders Duncan MacKenzie of Balmacara and Danny MacLeod of Carbost and designed by Anthony Medlycot. The hut was opened on 5th June 1965 by Dame Flora MacLeod of MacLeod. A committee now runs the hut according to the Trust Deed laid down when it was built.
The memorial plaque outside the hut reads:
Glen Brittle
Memorial Hut
1939-1945
This hut is built
in memory of those
who found strength
in the hills
to sustain them
even unto death.
