Steep war memorial before work © Steep Parish Council 2007The war memorial in the village of Steep in Hampshire is positioned on the corner of Church Road and Hill Lane in the centre of the village. The memorial is made of the local Selbourne stone and takes the form of a pillar topped by a shrine, consisting of an alcove with a pitched tiled roof. At the bottom of the pillar is an integral stone planter. Inset on the pillar are ceramic tiles on which lettering has been painted then fired. The tiles’ surround has been gilded and fired. Beside the memorial are two benches and a small garden.

In October 2007 War Memorials Trust granted £685 towards work to clean the memorial, fix the stone planter in front of the memorial, re-point the memorial where necessary, repair the tiles, repaint the lettering, re-gild where necessary around the edge of the tiles, apply a micro-crystalline wax on the surface and trim the vegetation around the memorial.
