The King’s School on Cumberland Street in Macclesfield has war memorials to both World Wars. The First World War memorial is a bronze plaque carrying the names of 70 who died in the conflict. The memorial is within a grade II listed building.
In 2002 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £250 towards conservation of the plaque. Previous attempts at restoration needed to be repaired. The memorial was cleaned with distilled water and afterwards a micro-crystalline wax applied to the surface to leave a dark brown patina with the red-gold letters visible. This created an even appearance and covered earlier damage.
The memorial was erected in 1929. It has always been within the school although located in different parts over the years. It is currently hung alongside the Second World War memorials.
