West Dean war memorial is stands in St Mary's Churchyard. The Cornish granite cross carries an inscription and the names of the fallen from the First World War. In front of the cross is a tablet carrying details of those commemorated from World War II.

West Dean war memorial cross © Angela van der Horst, 2010In 2003, War Memorials Trust awarded £150 towards repairs, cleaning and re-lettering of the war memmorial.

The World War II tablet was added in November 1991.

The inscription on the base of the cross reads:

"In memory of 
the heroes of this village 
who fell in the Great War
1914-1918

Lt. Herman Theodore Wells, A.S.C.
Pte. Alfred Edney Street, 1st Devons 
Pte. Harold Percy Kennett, Sig.R.E. 
Pte. William John Bishop, 1st Hants.

Greater love hath no man than this 
that a man lay down his life for his friends"

The inscription on the additional tablet reads:

"Also of those who gave their 
lives in the Second World War 
1939-1945

Pte. Henry John Clifford, Glos. Regt. 
Sapper Cyril Donald Hannabuss, R.E.
Marine Gordon Hows, H.M.S. Hood
Sgt. Pilot Ronald Bertram McPherson, R.A.F.V.R. 
L.S.A. Ronald John Pearce, H.M.S. Hood"
