Sheffield's Great Central Railway war memorial is a series of panels within a wooden frame - upon the panels are the names of those who fell in World War I. It is on display outside the Royal Victoria Holiday Inn Hotel.
In 2002, a Small Grants Scheme grant of £250 was given towards the restoring and relocation. The memorial has been moved several times during its lifetime and its new setting is very close to its original placement, the site of the former Sheffield Victoria Station.
The memorial remembers 1304 ex-railway men who died in World War I. It was unveiled in 1922 by Earl Haig. Originally sited on the forecourt of the Victoria station and hotel, it was moved inside the station booking hall in 1938, moved again in 1971 to Wickes Arches and then in 2003 moved to its current location outside The Royal Victoria Holiday Inn Hotel very close to its original location.
The Great Central Railway Society are the owners of the war memorial.
