The Grade II listed Clipsham limestone war memorial in the south east Cambridgeshire town of Balsham has two ornate sculptures with canopy above and moulding below on top of a slim hexagonal pillar, resting on a plinth and a four-stepped octagonal base. The sculpture on the north side of the top of the memorial is a Calvary scene, and on the south side is a representation of Mary with the Christ child on her knee. There are inscriptions on the plinth and steps of the north face. The memorial stands in the churchyard of Holy Trinty, Balsham parish church.
The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.
In June 2003 the memorial received funding from two grant schemes. A grant of £846 from English Heritage went towards work to clean the memorial with low pressure water and natural bristle brushes, with a non-ionic soap or a mild biocide. A condition survey of the memorial was also to be commissioned to advise on what further work was necessary after the memorial was cleaned. War Memorials Trust’s Small Grants Scheme gave £250 towards work to clean the memorial and re-point failing joints.
In 2015 a grant of £150 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grant Scheme towards repairs with lime mortar where required to prevent water ingress.
The inscription on the riser of the bottom step of the memorial reads
Remember those from Balsham
who in these years of war
made the great sacrifice
Names are also carved on the bottom step of the memorial. The dates
1914 – 1918
are carved on one face of the plinth, and
1939 – 1945
on another.
The memorial was constructed in 1919 by the Oxford architect F E Howard. World War II names were added in December 1946.
