Twechar war memorial after work ©East Dunbartonshire Council, 2018The war memorial consists of a granite rough hewn Celtic cross with carved sword surmounting a tapered plinth with inset inscription panels. The memorial is raised from ground level of a tampering granite block base. The memorial is located within its own garden area off Twechar Main Street.

In 2017 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,030 for conservation and repair works. The memorial had a build-up of soiling and this along with damaged lead lettering and a deteriorating paint finish was making the inscription more difficult to read. In addition the memorial had a number of cracked construction joints. The grant funding has assisted with works to clean the memorial, repair and re-paint the lettering as well as re-pointing with a lime mortar.

The memorial was unveiled to the community of the mining village by Captain William Buchanan, MC General Manager to Messrs William Baird & Company Ltd on Sunday 11th December 1920.
