Eltisley war memorial lych gate is at the entrance to St John the Baptist and St Pandionia Parish Church on St Neots Road. The gateway is Grade II listed. The gateway consists of an oak frame structure set on a stone plinth. There is an inscription across the lintel.
The memorial has received multiple grants and the summary details of this record relate to the most recent grant.
In March 2004 two grants were awarded for work on the memorial. English Heritage made an offer of £1685 towards the work and War Memorials Trust contributed £200. The stone plinths were cleaned using mild biocide and water and where necessary was repaired using stone to match the existing wall. Open joints were re-pointed, lettering on the memorial tablets was re-cut with hand tools to make it more legible, the gates were repaired and their fittings adjusted to prevent them harming the stone further, the oak frame examined and repaired where necessary, the concrete pointing being removed from the cracks at this time. Work to the roof was also undertaken; the wooden cross was reinstated on the apex, moss and organic growth was removed using a spatula, biocide and water and missing tiles were re-fixed or replaced.
The memorial bears two inscriptions; along the lintel is inscribed
Death is swallowed up in victory
and on stone panels inside the lychgate
To the ever glorious memory of
Eltisley Men who gave their lives
in the Great War 1914-1919
Faithful unto Death
The names of the fallen are also listed on these panels.
The Bishop of Ely dedicated the gate in 1920 after the Women’s Institute organised fund raising for its creation.
