This granite war memorial comprises a cross set on a tapering plinth over an octagonal three-stepped base. The plinth bears the names of the WWI Fallen with two of the steps of the base bearing the names of the WWII Fallen. The inscription is executed in cut lead lettering. The memorial is located by the curtilage wall of St Mary the Virgin Church in Payhembury on a stone platform above road level.

In 2017 War Memorials Trust gave a grant of £870 towards the undertaking of conservation works to clean the memorial with a combination of hand cleaning using natural bristle brushes and Thermatech steam cleaning. The lead lettering of the memorial was repainted in black acrylic paint to match the original design of the memorial. Loose and failing mortar was raked-out from the memorial’s construction joints which were then repointed using a lime mortar.

The inscription reads:
In Grateful Memory/ of The Men Of This Parish/ Who Fell in The Great War/ 1914-1918/ Names)/ 1939-1945/ (Names)
