Alston Moor war memorial is located at the junction of the A686 Penrith Road and A689 Brampton Road, Alston, Cumbria. This memorial is a tall granite obelisk on a four stepped square base with a double plinth. The site is paved with Penrith red sandstone flags with stone steps leading up from the pavement. There is a stone wall behind the obelisk. The incised inscription, painted black commemorates those who died in WWI and WWII.
In 2016 a grant of £6,230 was awarded through the War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards steam cleaning to make the inscription legible, repairs to the stone paving, replacement of broken flags, lime mortar pointing, re-levelling the stone steps, rebuilding and pointing the pillar on the wall to the rear and repointing the wall.
The memorial was designed and executed by Messers C. Parkin & Son of Crosby Ravenworth (Penrith). The site was prepared by Messers Craig Brothers, Alston. It was unveiled in 1922 with a ceremony attended by the Lord Mayor of Newcastle (whose brother is named on the memorial), Lord Lonsdale (who raised the Lonsdale Battalion in which the majority of Alston Moor men enlisted), the local MP, a representative from the District Council, representatives from the churches, ex service men, relatives of those named on the memorial and the Alston Band and local school children. Mr William Walton presented the deed of conveyance of the site on behalf of his brother Isaac to Mr Hugh Bell. Mr Isaac Walton presented the land and a £300 donation towards the cost of the memorial. A further £200 was raised by public subscription.
