The war memorial organ at St Mary’s Comberton was given to the church by the people of Comberton as a memorial to those who gave their lives during the Great War. A timber-mounted brass plaque on the adjacent wall carries a dedication inscription.
The war memorial organ is located inside the Grave I Listed parish church of St Mary in Comberton in St Mary's Comberton Conservation Area. The church stands on the highest ground in the village and is about half a mile from the crossroads that mark the village's intersection of Langley Green, Langley Road and Staithe Road in Langley.
In 2016 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £290 towards the undertaking of conservation works for the repair and replacement of fractured/missing tuning tongues and the retuning of the organ to ensure the memorial could continue in its original function. All pipes were marked with SmartWater as part of In Memorium 2014 campaign.
On August 1st 1919 the organ was dedicated by Canon Baldwin, Vicar of Harston. The organ was the first the church had ever had and is a war memorial which was installed at a cost about £170 all of which was covered by subscriptions. The builder was Mr Edwin Tyrrell of St Ives and the brass plate was the gift of Mr Mann of Cambridge, whose father was once churchwarden at Comberton.
An inscription for the brass plate reads:
“This organ was placed in the church as a thanksgiving for victory in the Great War 1914-1919 and in memory of the fallen.”
The names of the fallen follow.
