This war memorial consists of an octagonal pillar on an octagonal plinth and two-stepped base with a carved lantern on top with a statue of Christ on calvary on one side and Madonna and child on the opposite side. The memorial is constructed of limestone. It stands at the old entrance to Knebworth house and commemorates the fallen of both the First and Second World Wars.
In 2013 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,953 towards gentle water based cleaning, then sharpening up of the inscriptions to improve the legibility of the lettering and re-painting using a black enamel. The application also included the addition of 12 missing names from World War I following extensive research into the accuracy of the information.
The war memorial was constructed by Gething & Co Ltd and was unveiled on 14th August 1920 by Rt Hon Earl of Lytton with dedications from local clergy and dignitaries.
There are 32 names of those that fell in the Great War to which 24 names were added following the end of the 1939-1945 conflict. There are a number of inscriptions on the memorial including:
In Honour of the brave men from this parish who fought
In Thankfulness to God
In Remembrance of those who died in the Great War 1914-1918
They shall be mine saith the Lord of Hosts in that day when I make up my jewels.
