Duffield war memorial is located close to Alkmunds Church on Church Drive in Duffield, Derbyshire. This memorial is a sandstone Latin cross on a plinth above three steps, with a low metal railing on the middle step. The inscription is incised lettering painted black on the plinth commemorating those who died in World War I and II. It is located in Duffield/Duffield Bank Conservation Area.
In 2015 a grant of £1,790 was offered through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme, supported by First World War Memorials Programme. towards cleaning with steam to improve the legibility of the inscription. In addition, construction joints were re-pointed with lime mortar. As part of the In Memoriam 2014 initiative it was confirmed that SmartWater had been applied to the metal elements. When payment was made on completion of works in 2016 the grant was reduced by £590 to £1,200 because it was found that the lettering and railings did not need painting thus costs were lower than anticipated. It can be the case that appropriate cleaning of a war memorial is sufficient to improve the legibility without, for example, painting being required. In such cases War Memorials Trust may offer a grant with a condition that photographs are sent after cleaning and before further work is done to agree that additional work is necessary.
The war memorial was dedicated on 1st May 1921.
