Ironville and Codnor Park war memorial is located at the front of Christ Church on Casson Street in Ironville, Derbyshire. The memorial is a Cornish granite Runic cross with a rusticated finish with a Crusader’s sword carved in relief on the front. The raised lead lettering inscriptions are on finely axed panels painted black. They commemorate those who died in World War I and World War II. This memorial is within the curtilage of the Grade II listed church.
In 2016, a grant of £1,350 was offered through War Memorials Trust Grants Scheme towards conservation works. The memorial was cleaned with water and non-metallic brushes. In addition, the lead lettering was repainted to improve legibility in-line with the historic evidence of painting.
The building and engraving of the memorial was originally carried out by an ex-Service man, Mr Edward Cope of Riddings. The foundations and the paving from the gateway to the monument were laid by the Butterley Company. The memorial was unveiled by Maj Gen C. C. Van Straubenzee and dedicated by the Vicar Rev. Douglas G. Smith on 11th November 1923. The main organiser of the ceremony was Henry Eustace Mitton of the Butterley Company.
