Chiddingford war memorial stands in the churchyard of St Mary's on The Green within Chiddingfold conservation area. The wheel cross tops a tall shaft which sits on a square plinth. A stepped base supports the structure with both the base and plinth carrying inscriptions and names.
in 2014 a Small Grants Scheme award assisted repair and conservation works. The memorial was steam cleaned. Damaged mortar was carefully removed from construction joints and re-pointed in an appropriate lime based mortar. Defective paint was removed for the inscription and re-painted to match the existing.
As part of the Contract's Method Statement War Memorials Trust required details of any letters which, following cleaning, it was believed needed deepening and sharpening to be submitted to the charity prior to any work being carried out. Often cleaning will significantly improve the condition of lettering and the charity will require involvement in the decision as to whether any work is required to the lettering to ensure this is not undertaken unnecessarily. There are only a limited number of occasions lettering can be worked on so it is important it is not undertaken too early. As this condition as not met - works to the lettering were undertaken without War Memorials Trust agreement - the grant was reduced at payment to reflect that the Contract was broken. A final payment of £1,160 was made.
Parish records suggest the memorial was erected in 1923.
