The memorial consists of a granite obelisk surmounted on tapering plinth with commemorative inscription, raised on a two stepped base. The memorial is located within the grounds of St Philip and St James churchyard.

In 2014 a grant of £2,340 was offered for repair and conservation work. Damage to the joints of the obelisk had resulted in erosion which in turn had affected the central spike causing the memorial to lean. To address these issues the memorial was carefully dismantled and under the supervision of a structural engineer was reassembled.

The memorial was funded on the basis of subscriptions collected in 1919, £188. 7s. 3d. was raised from 188 subscriptions. The memorial was erected in 1920 by Lorenza Lewis, for the cost of £161.10s. The record shows additional items such as Book of Remembrance, service books etc. brought the total expenses to £179. 11s. 1d. to accrue interest in the bank. Funds were raised again in 1922 to provide the kerbing, concreting and chippings added in August 1922 again by Lorenza Lewis
