The memorial consists of a Portland wheeled cross surmounted on a square plinth with incised commemorative inscriptions and roll of honour. The memorial is raised from ground level on a three stepped base. The memorial is located within the grounds of St John the Evangelist’s Churchyard.
In 2014 a grant of £2,925 offered through the Grants for War Memorials scheme for repair and conservation works. Stone damage at the memorial along with cracked and missing mortar in the joints was allowing water to get into the memorial causing more damage. The inscription on the memorial was difficult to read due to soiling on the stone and flaking paint finish on the inscription. To address these issues damage sections of stones were repaired or where required sections were replaced with a matching stone. Cracked and missing mortar was re-pointed with a lime mortar. In addition the memorial was appropriately cleaned and inscriptions were re-painted.
The memorial was designed and built by Mr Strong of Portway Warminster and was dedicated on 15th February 1920. The cost of the memorial, which was £170, was raised by public subscription though house to house collection.
