The memorial consists of stone obelisk which surmounts a square column, containing a series of leaded inscriptions, raised on a four stepped base. It is surrounded by hard landscaping and an ironwork fence. The memorial is located on a small green at the junction of Melksham Lane and The Street, Broughton Gifford .
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £400 for repair and conservation work. The base of the memorial was in poor condition and the stone was flaking. In addition biological growth and soiling covered areas of the memorial and this was making the inscriptions more difficult to read. The mortar in the construction joints was either cracked or missing. To address these issues the memorial was appropriately cleaned and re-pointed with a lime mortar. In addition the flaking stone steps were repaired.
The Devizes and Wiltshire Gazette, dated 27 May 1920 reported that the memorial was unveiled on Saturday 22 May 1920 by Mrs Browne of Gifford Hall. The £300 for the memorial was raised entirely by subscriptions from people in the village and it was built (and remains) on common land. The memorial was designed and erected by W Webb and Sons of Chippenham. The memorial commemorates the 23 men who died during the Great War, and 129 men who fought in that war and returned.
