The war memorial in the Cambridgeshire village of Horningsea is an unusual design; three bronze replicas of a heavily corroded rifle found at the location of the battle of the Somme support a bronze cast of a World War I British infantry helmet, the brim of which has an inscription. The sculpture stands on a block of York stone on a base in a paved area in the Jubilee Gardens on the High Street.
In May 2005 War Memorials Trust made a grant of £200 towards the costs of this new memorial.
The inscription around the brim of the helmet reads
In memory of the fallen
and gives the dates of the two world wars.
Before the memorial was created the men who served and died in the two world wars were commemorated on plaques inside the parish church of St Peter’s, where their names were listed, but during the planning of the VE Day 60th anniversary celebrations the Parish Council took the decision to commission a war memorial. The memorial was created at cost by a young sculptor who was born, brought up and works in the village. The new memorial was dedicated at a ceremony on Sunday 13th November 2005 by Revd. Michael Bowers.
