Helperby war memorial before work © J N Denison 2005The war memorial in the Yorkshire village of Helperby is a sandstone obelisk on a plinth, with a two-stepped base. It is located on a cobbled area on the Main Street and is surrounded by iron railings. There is a metal plaque on one face of the plinth. The obelisk is topped by a metal cross.

In October 2005 War Memorials Trust granted £250 towards the construction of a raised paving area near the memorial. This was necessary because the memorial was being used as a roundabout and the railing had been hit several times by vehicles. Traffic is now unable to drive round the memorial.

The memorial has been managed by the Parish Council since 1920. In 1958 a bronze plaque was added with names of the fallen of the two world wars. This plaque covers the original inscribed names of the World War One fallen, which by 1958 had eroded. The memorial was designed by architect Charles S. Sayer and was constructed by the local firm E. Moorey and Sons. Mr. Moorey was an ex-serviceman.
