Cornholme war memorial is located at Vale Baptist Church and takes the form of a sculpture. The memorial is composed of a Yorkshire sandstone stepped base and plinth (or pedestal) and white marble sculpture of a winged angel. The inscriptions are incised in the base and plinth and painted black. The memorial commemorates the fallen of the First and Second World Wars.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £587 towards the conservation of this memorial. The memorial and the surrounding paving was cleaned using non-metallic bristle brushes and water. Repairs were made to the spalled area of stone and open joints were re-pointed using a non-cementitious lime mortar, colour matched to the stonework. The lettering was re-painted using black enamel paint.
Cornholme war memorial was created by Messrs Hargreaves, monumental mason of Bacup and was unveiled on 11th September 1920 by Alderman E Crabtree. The inscription on the memorial reads:
“Erected
by public subsription
in remembrance of
the men
of Cornholme Ward
who gave their lives
for the cause of
freedom
in the Great War
1914-1919.
At the going down of the sun and in
the morning we will remember them
1939-1945”
"names
May their reward be as great
as their sacrifice”
"names
To live in hearts we leave behind
is not to die”
