The Long Melford memorial is constructed of Clipsham stone in the form of a Latin cross. At the base of the cross shaft are carved shields on four sides, these represent St Michael, St Nicholas, St George and St Edmund. The cross sits on an octagonal base which has a moulded cornice and inscription in medieval script. There is then a two stepped plinth upon which are engraved the 96 names of the fallen from World War I and World War II in alphabetical order. The war memorial cross is located within the churchyard of the Grade I listed Holy Trinity Church.
In 2014 an application was received to the Grants for War Memorials scheme to clean the war memorial and undertake stone repairs. Areas of the stone to the octagonal base had delaminated resulting in some damage to the inscriptions. A grant of £3,300 was awarded to clean the war memorial by hand using a natural bristle brush and to undertake a number of stone indent repairs to those areas of damage. The indent repairs also required some recurving of the inscriptions which had been damaged. This work was undertaken by hand in the same style and font as the original lettering.
The memorial was designed by Mr F E Howard, Architect of Oxford and built by Mr F J Lindley, of North Street, Sudbury. The memorial was unveiled in 1920 to commemorate the 96 fallen from Long Melford in World War I, in 1946 12 names of the fallen from World War II were added to the memorial.
