Rougham war memorial is located in St Mary’s Churchyard and takes the form of a cross. The memorial is composed of a two stepped base surmounted by a plinth and wheel cross. The memorial stands on a square base and is surrounded by oak posts linked with chains. The inscription is incised in the stone and painted and commemorates the fallen of the First and Second World Wars.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,071 towards the conservation of the memorial. Works included the removal of loose and defective mortar from the joints using non mechanical tools and re-pointing these with a lime mortar which colour matched the stone. As the inscriptions were losing legibility these were re-painted using black enamel paint, and the oak posts surrounding the memorial which were rotting were replaced on a like-for-like basis and the existing chain was then re-fixed to the posts. Additional works, not within the Grant Offer but included in the contract and undertaken by the applicant at their expense, included the replacement of the existing concrete surround using concrete paving slabs. The grant was reduced because the application of a biocide was undertaken but not included in the approved Method Statement.
Rougham war memorial was dedicated on 5 June 1921. The inscription on the memorial reads:
“To the glory of God
and in memory of the men of Rougham
who fell in the Great War 1914-1919.
(names)”
“1939-1945
(names)”
