Stebbing war memorial is a granite Latin cross on an octagonal plinth and three step base. It is located at the junction between Watch House Road and High Street, within the Conservation Area of Stebbing. The memorial lists the names of the men that fought and died in the First and Second World Wars, along with commemorative inscriptions.
In 2014 a grant of £586 was offered through the Small Grants Scheme towards cleaning and re-pointing the memorial. Low pressure steam cleaning was used to remove the build-up of dirt on the stone and the letters re-painted with black enamel paint in order to make the inscriptions more legible. Open joints were re-pointed with a lime mortar to limit erosion to the stone and, based on extensive evidence, the name “Herbert Banes” was altered to correctly read “Herbert Banks”.
Stebbing war memorial was erected at some point between late 1919 and early 1920, constructed by J B Slythe Monumental Mason of Witham, at a cost of £215 10 shillings.
