The war memorial is consists of a freestanding Market Cross, constructed from Doddington Quarry Freestone. The memorial base and shaft are approximately 30 metres in height and are surmounted by the burgh crest, The Flying Spur which is made in bronze. The memorial is located in the centre of Moffat High Street on the site of the old Market Cross.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £1,728 for repair and conservation work. Water was getting into the memorial through gaps left by cracks or missing mortar. In addition, the corrosion of the internal fixings of bronze finial and the bronze itself meant the memorial was in poor condition. To address these issues the memorial was re-pointed using a lime mortar. The bronze finial was to be cleaned and treated and the internal fixings are to be replaced in stainless steel to ensure the finial was secured.
The memorial was built in 1920 and dedicated in the November of that year. It originally bore the names of 7 officers and 70 non-commissioned officers and men who gave their lives in WW1. There have been further additions in WW2 and subsequent conflicts.
The memorial was designed by Mr Reginald Fairlie (Architect) of Edinburgh and was sculpted by Mr Alexander Carrick also of Edinburgh, who at the height of his career through the 1920’s and 1930’s was involved in many prestigious architectural projects and was responsible for many war memorials erected after World War 1. Alexander Carrick was a teacher and later “Head of Sculpture” at Edinburgh College of Art.
