The memorial takes the form of a non-freestanding brass sheet backed with a heavy slate framing, which is mounted in the Minard Village Hall, Minard. The commemorative plaque is incised lettering filed with a wax/resin material in black, red and green. Surrounding the lettering is a border in the Celtic style featuring entwined snakes or similar, with a crowed thistle to the right, a crowned saltire to the left, all surmounted by the lion rampant and the crown.
In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £2,760 for the conservation and repair works. The brass memorial plaque was facing a number of issues including tarnishing and scratches to the brass, which were due to historic inappropriate cleaning, deterioration of decorative in fill wax lettering and deliberate damage to the surrounding slate mount. To address these issues repair works to the in filled waxed letters, where the original material had been lost or was badly damaged and appropriate cleaning of the brass plaque reducing the impact of the tarnished appearance were undertaken. Followed this work an application of a protective wax to the brass was made. In addition works were undertaken to reduce the impact of the incised graffiti to the slate surround.
After extensive research of a wide range of resources and requests for information from the local community unfortunately nothing about the history of the Minard war memorial is really known.
The dedication inscription on the brass plaque of the memorial reads:
“In grateful
remembrance of
all from Minard
who served their country
in the Great War 1914-1918”
