Milngavie war memorial before work © WMT, 2014 The war memorial consist of a bronze women kneeling down with an arm extended holding a lamp of liberty. The figure sits on a granite tapered plinth which has 8 separate bronze plaques, two sitting on each face of the rectangular section plinth. Both the fallen from the First and Second World Wars are commemorated on the plaques. The lower portion of the granite has been carved to resemble a rock face and has a rough texture. Milngavie War Memorial is located in Douglas Gardens/Main Street Milngavie, East Dunbartonshire, in a central location within the Milngavie Shopping Precinct.

In 2014 War Memorials Trust offered a grant of £7,310 Milngavie war memorial after work © East Dunbartonshire Council, 2014 for repair and conservation works. Exposure to weather and pollution had resulted in corrosion of the bronze elements which in-turn have caused run off staining on areas of the stonework. The construction joints on the memorial had been re-pointed in the past using a cement mortar this had cracked or was missing which means that water is getting into the memorial. To address these issues works to clean and repair both the stone and bronze elements of the memorial were undertaken. The applied paint finish on the bronze was appropriately removed and staining on the stone was be lessened. The joints were re-pointed with a lime mortar.

Milngavie war memorial was built in 1922 by the sculptor George Henry Paulin was unveiled by Brigadier General Campbell Douglas CB at 3.15pm on Sunday 17 September 1922.

The main inscription on the memorial reads:

“Burgh of Milngavie and district
in proud and loving memory of our men who made the supreme sacrifice in
the Great War. Nobly they kept alive the lamp of liberty.”
